FINAL PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT "REPORT CARD" POST - ACTIVE LEARNING 2015

Participation

Back in grade 8, whenever we played hockey, or activities like poker fitness, I would hate it. I wouldn't give it my all and barely participate because I didn't like it. But now, no matter what activities we do, I give it a 100%.  Because if you don't like to play that activity, at least try to make it fun for yourself AND your peers by trying your best. This could be used as an analogy for exercises. For instance, if you cannot do a regular push up, then you can modify it and still do the exercise. The next time we have the fitness testing, will be the last time this year. And to prove my point, I will give it the best of my ability.

I am always here for P: E unless I have to miss it. For example, prepping for band concert and Illness. Since Physical Education takes place in period 3, everyone is punctual. Of course, not perfectly on time because some people take more time to change than others. I always bring my Gym Strip on PE days.  Once and only once, I didn't bring it as it was Day 2 and we weren't supposed to have P: E. Yes, the teacher posted about it on twitter, but I probably missed it or was busy over the weekends. “Missing “sometimes” or having “no strip” more than once or twice may result in a failing mark here.”

I find myself pretty skilled at various sports: for example FOOTBALL (European, not American), and badminton. By skilled, I don't mean a professional of course, but good enough. Currently, I’m not as good as I was before, but I've been getting back to it by practising for fun on weekends with my brother *who is 10x better* On choice days, I always pick football, speed ball, or CTF. This motivation behind it is pretty simple, I pick sports I like to do whenever I get a choice . I'm, also thinking of joining the football team next year, maybe.

Social Responsibility and Contribution to the Class

As I said, I try 100% all the time to make everyone’s experiences more successful.

Look at it as a way to motivate. Not always, but most of the time, I help out with equipment. For example, I helped put away equipment during CTF. I say mostly, because our class is so awesome that everyone tries to get the equipment and there’s none left over. Almost like you have to race to put the equipment away. I bring a positive energy  all the time.

Honesty is the best policy. Cliché? How about “Honesty, JUST DO IT” Anyways, I'm always honest during competition and on fitness scores. I mean why would you even lie about your fitness score. Firstly, you aren't going to get marked on it, and if you were going to, own up to it.

Healthy Living

I have improved on my beep test scores and I will continue improving. Even if it’s up by 0.1 or 1, it doesn't matter because it is still improvement. (7 – 8.4) Going from a 7 to 8.4 was an inspiration to me, it proved that, if I try harder than I tried last time, I get rewarded. As of now, I see myself a fitter person than I was at the start of the year. Because of the time I dedicate outside of PE. (Treadmill, Gym, Swimming, and Football) Some barriers I face is; the feeling when you want to give up after you are so tired and I also tend to get a strain/cram/pain near my kidney area after I’m tired which is normal.

Personally, I don't believe in diets and I never will. My motto is “work 2x as much as you eat”. Eating a lot of proteins, and vegetables actually helps you. Going on a diet restricts your nourishment, which causes you to feel weak. I have been dedicating time on weekend to run on the treadmill, play football, go to the gym once in a while, and swimming. I don't do this for this blog. I do this for myself. I post it, because why not?! A friend once told me “Don’t work about the PE grades, concentrate on your fitness” and this is what I follow. These extracurricular activities really helped me become fit, strong and have a better endurance than I used to. Scroll through my blog and you will see loads of evidence.

My past goal was to become more fit and have more endurance. And by doing these “activities”, it really helped me. For instance, on the treadmill, I would get more calories burned in less time. My future plans/goals are: to do what I've been doing and keep it up in the summer as I will have lots of time

Digital Portfolio and Reflective skills

I have evidence for most of my posts and I have 47 posts in total, if you include this one, the fitness one, and the buddies’ one. I always try to go in depth and in detail in my posts, and I put a lot of effort into it. I find commenting is a great way of receiving feedback from your peers and your teacher. Again, I go in detail and I try to put in some evidence, which I find challenging because I don't have a phone. And the funny thing is, that I don't need one J My blog has got most of the evidence except a video of myself. But hey, a picture is worth 1000 words.

I would give myself an A because of my consistency in my fitness and my blogs.

PE FITNESS RESULTS

Beep Test : 10.
Plank : 1:37
Push-Ups :  23 ( at once only)
Vertical : 30 cm (Not sure if you can bend your knees before you jump for vertical, I didn't bend mine)
T-test: 12.41
*I'm happy that I beat my old beep-test score 8.4, and now in grade 10 I will set the bar higher and go for higher than 10 :)

This is evidence that all the treadmill, exercise sweat, and hardwork pays off!

FITNESS TUESDAY

Surprisingly, today we had choice for fitness and the choices were: running laps around Gold Stone Park, Yoga in the small gym and pyramid (series of exercises) in the large gym. 3/4 of all the classes COMBINED went to do yoga... Some did the pyramid and some went for the lap run which I also did. Surprisingly, the majority going for the lap run were Grade 8's and a couple of 10's. So I tried to lead by running most of the time ( stopped to take breathers) and hoping to make them work harder. And MR. Vahn also did the same. I wasn't that tired while running but I had to take breathers. In the end, I think I did about 6-7 laps and overall good exercise,

FOOTBALL

On Saturday, me and my brother went to play a match of football, just me and him. And by football I mean real FOOTBALL. Not American Football. Unfortunately, he couldn't bring his phone as his shorts had no pockets and he might have lost it while playing. It's your choice to believe me or not. Because if im lying, im the one who is losing. Anyways, it's been a long, long time since Ive played football with him. We were always busy with school etc. He usually goes to play with his friends on the weekends, but he tells me not to come as they are older than me and play more aggressively. Even though, on Sunday he's gonna go play, he still came to play with me on Saturday. We begin by jogging from my house to the field. There, we would warm up by passing to each other from a far distance. He actually pointed out that my accuracy was still good as usual. Afterwards, I would be the goalkeeper and he would take some shots. And then when it was my turn, I scored some goals. In the end, we did a 1v1 match. First to 10 wins. It was a tough match for me as I was facing someone with more experience, endurance and skills. In the end I won, 10-9 ( I was actually winning 8 to 5 and he started catching up):/ It was a very close one. Obviously, he didn't go 100% but its cool with me. We played from like 5:20 to about 8. In the end, my legs were tired and we walked back home. I had a very good time.

BUDDIES

Today, we had buddies yet again. And I believe next week will be the last time :( Today, we played Lacrosse. Initially, I didn't want to play it, but in the end, I wished we could play more of it! So, after we encountered with our buddies, we explained them the rules of lacrosse. Of course, some didn't understand, but after explaining over and over again and telling them to be careful, they finally got the rules. One rule that was broken from time to time was the 3 step rules but it didn't matter to me because they were having a blast. Unfortunately, the big buddies couldn't play because there wasn't enough sticks and if we played we could've injured our little buddies. Again, I had to emphasise the rules to my buddy, Whenever he was trapped I would point out to his teammates who were open and he would pass to them. I also gave him some tactics . In the end, the little buddies enjoyed the game very much and wanted to play it again, My buddy was very sweaty in the end but that didn't matter to him as he had fun. Also, we would have to stop the game from time to time as our buddies would all fight for the balls.

CAPTURE THE FLAG

On wednesday I believe, we had choice and the choices were : Capture The Flag, Lacrosse, Hockey, Badminton  and a couple more. Initially, I wanted to play some badminton, but there was too many people and since it was sunny outside, I thought, why not play CTF . Surprisingly, there wasn't THAT many people and there were lots of 8's, some 9's and some 10's.  Shockingly, a grade 9, Tulin, took leadership and Gurjap and Abhishek enforced the rules. I tried to enforce some of them to the 8's whenever we encountered each other. I also encouraged my friends to play. I would always run and get the footballs. And when I was tagged, I would run back and go again. It was 8/10 vs 9's. Since we lost twice, Gurjap suggested we balance out teams and after we did, the game went smoothly. Unfortunately, many people weren't listening and the leaders had to scream. In the end, me, Abi and Gur helped to put away the equipment.

JOGGIN'

On Sunday, since I had nothing important to do, me and my brother went for a jog. We started jogging from my place and jogged all the way to SH and back. We then raced a couple of times and I actually got faster. My brother usually beats me in races, but I was toe-to-toe this time. Overall, It felt good to exercise and spent some time with my brother.

BUDDIES

Friday was very rushed as we had to go to buddies, come back and eat quickly and go to the assembly. But it turned out fine. My buddy was happy to see me, and we chatted a lot. He told me that he was excited for summer and excited to play modified baseball with us. I found it amazing how he was so involved in the game, when at first he thought it would be boring.. How ironic.. Fortunately, he didn't play cockily and let his friends swing the bat too. It was very hard for me to make him understand the rules but after the big buddies demonstrated, he got the essence of it. Not I see how it's like for our teachers when we don't listen..

TREADMILL

Today, I worked out on the treadmill again. This time, I did a mild , not too hard, and not too easy run. I kept a somewhat consistent pace, and I would slow down once in a while to get water, I found that music as motivation helps a lot :) Tomorrow or Monday, I might do another run. I felt tired but good after running.

MODIFIED 25 MINUTES RUN

During this fitness exercise, we ran around the lower field in groups of 3 to 4. We were supposed to find people with the same beep test scores and go with them. According to your beep test scores, you would either run for 1 mins and rest for 1 mins, or run for 2 mins and rest for 1 and so on. Since my last one was 8.4, I chose to go with Nick, Miggy and Amrit. Nick and Miggy had a somewhat close beep test score as I had but Amrit had 6.6 or something like that. Additionally, we were also supposed to let the slowest person, in this case Amrit, lead the way so we keep a consistent pace. One fact I can point out is that Amrit tried his best even though his calves were burning like crazy! And so did we. However, me, Nick and Miggy had to run slower than we usually run so we can keep a consistent pace.  One benefit of all that is ; when you run slower than usual, in other words hold yourself back, you actually work your thighs a lot more. As it's harder to slow jog. Overall, I was tired at the end, as when Neuf blew that whistle, everyone in my group ran like crazy!! Even Amrit Sprinted which was surprisingly very fast!!

*Will try to get pic from Miggy*

SMALL GYM ACTIVITIES COMBINATION

Today, we had the small gym to ourselves and we made use of the space efficiently by playing small games. Firstly, we played 9 pins which  is a game where you have 9 pins set up, each guarded by 9 different people and the objective is to knock their pins down by either throwing a dodgeball or kicking it (which I learned today). You could leave your pin and run to knock the others down but you had to watch out for yours too. Personally, I stayed a long time in the game and got some pins down. Afterwards, we played a game of regular dodgeball but I had some difficulties. I couldn't aim the ball properly (sounds crazy right?) and missed a lot, but it was a very exciting game as I got some people down. Finally, we ended the day with a game of benchball but it was pretty short as we were running out of time. Overall shoutout to peers/teacher for great activities.

CAPTURE THE FLAG

Last Thursday, we played Capture the Flag. It was 9's against 10's and it had it's difficulties but overall it was good. Grade 9's had the lower field to hide their flag and the Grade 10's had the upper field. Additionally, there was a neutral zone where you would go to if you got tagged. You also had to stay 10-15 feet away from the actual flag but the rules were broken from time to time, but no one is to blame because  if we wanted to make the game very good, then it was our responsibility to make it. Anyways, most of us stayed near our base at the start to protect our flag. But some stayed to guard it till the end which is fine. But I, on the other hand, went to the enemy's territory to try and get the flag. Sure I got caught but I went back to try and get it. In the end, I lost track of the scores but that doesn't matter because we had fun.

THREADMILL

This past weekend, I continued my treadmill routine. But this time, I did interval training but it wasn't timed. What I mean by that that, is I did it by feel. For Instance, I would run at 8-8.5 MPH (Increased it) and stop to get a drink of water. Afterwards, I would walk to regain my composure/momentum and go again. I felt more tired than  usual, because instead of doing the treadmill last week, I went to the gym. On the summer, I plan to do 15-30 mins each day or every other day to get fit.

BootCamp

On Tuesday, we did a new and fun exercise called "BootCamp". It's basically a list of 10 exercises that you must complete. The exercises include Incline/Decline pushups, over and backs, running and Split Lunges. You have to do each one in 1 minute without stopping and you get a 30 sec rest. The point of the exercise is to see who can do the most of the exercises under one minute. You compete against a partner. Mine was Erren and he was doing pretty good. I beat him in some and he beat me in some also. So it was a balanced pair-up. Unfortunately, I couldn't go 100% on the arm/shoulder exercises as of my sore arms, but I still fought the pain and tried my best. Which resulted in more soring but it only means that I did the workout right!  My total reps was 350 because of all the soreness! And I could've gotten more if I did the easy exercises 1st and then the hard ones. Overall, good day!

SPEEDBALL (ALL BAND)

Today for P:E, we had the combined class of Day 1 and Day 2 and we played Speedball. It consisted of 3 footballs and 1 American football. As there was a lot of us, the footballs weren't "moving". What I mean is: some balls would get stuck to one end, not actually moving. As usual,  some people wanted to show off, and not pass etc.. But most of my peers did pass to me and others. I also tried to pass the ball whenever I could, to let other people have fun also. Personally, I didn't try my very, very best because I was still sore from the gym, and unfortunately, I didn't have my P:E strip. I didn't have it because today was Day 2 firstly, and I didn't check Twitter for updates. But it's the first time I actually "forgot" my P:E strip. But I still manages to run and pass to my peers. In the end, we could've circulated the footballs more. A suggestion would be to add a couple of more balls.

Weights/Swimming

Yesterday, me and my bro went to the gym and then swimming. In the gym, we decided to work on our arms and our core. He showed me how to lift the weights, so I don't get injured and I don't get sore. We worked on our arms for about 30 minutes and then we went swimming in the pool. I thought I could swim, until I actually got in the pool and couldn't swim. But I was able to keep my balance and we chilled along with my uncle. After swimming, we went to a steam room and took a chill head shower. Couldn't take pictures because it wasn't allowed.

TUESDAY INTERVAL TRAINING?

Today, we did a fitness exercise where you would find a partner and partner A would run (outside, round the gym) and partner B would do various exercises. Some exercises were : push ups, planks and shoulder presses. Since the running distance was short, I ran faster, because I didn't want my partner to be completely exhausted doing the exercises, and so I don't lose my momentum going into them. However, my partner ran a bit slower but it actually benefited me, because I got more time to do the exercises. I especially worked harder on this fitness day because the whole week, my class won't have P:E because we have to prep for a band concert and I wanted to give it my best, like always. Near the final seconds, I looked at the clock and it was 10 sec until the buzzer and I noticed my partner coming in. My brain wanted me to wait it out, but my body said, it could still go. And during the last 10 sec, I actually ran, and got inspiration because a member of PE:10 Fitness was also running. In the end, I was so exhausted, I huffed and puffed more than the Wolf in the Three Little Pigs! I also found that stretching in the end, benefited me because now I don't feel sore like I used to.

THREADMILL

Yesterday, I ran on the treadmill, but this time I didn't feel tired. And it was because I had a bottle of water next to me, which I always forget to bring. I would run very fast, and jog/walk to drink some water and run again. So yesterday's treadmill run was basically an interval one, but it wasn't consistent, because I stopped only when I needed water. I tried to go beyond 7MPH and I ran at 7.5 this time. I could increase the level but I decided to keep it at 7.5 and increase per runs. And after the run, I tried to eat a reasonable amount of food! Next week, I will try to do an endurance training one.

BUDDIES Part.3

Last Friday, we went to see our buddies again! It began with an awesome start because we ran in the rain to go to their place. Once we arrived, we met them and talked a lot, since we haven't seen them in a long time. We later played the classic rock paper scissors, and the buddies would face each other. It was a bit hard to make my buddy understand the timing; for instance, "rock, paper-" and he start playing there. After some time, he finally understood and he played against his friends. We later switched to Full Body Rock Paper Scissors(Start=3 Jumping Jacks, Squat=Rock, Hands in the air = Paper, Gangster=Scissors) To make them exercise, everyone would line up on one side of the gym, facing someone else on the opposite side. And then when the music played, they would run and play the game. It was way more fun than I had expected! Then near the end, we played this game that I've never played before : Octopus. I had no idea how to play it, but my buddy showed me how. How ironic! And we ended with a bang, when the buddies did a dance performance for us.!

Buddies Part:2!

For some reason, this didn't get posted but here it goes. The last time we saw our buddies was just as fun as the first time. We played chariots in the chapati field, and it was very fun. I got to see my buddy actually enjoy the game and get involved. He tried his best and he got many pennies. Very proud of him, because he is usually a quiet kid but now he opened up. I didn't have to lead the kids that much because they took leadership into their own hands.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!

Every weekend, I usually run on the treadmill for 30 mins or so. But I change it up each time. For instance, I do endurance running, and sprinting and also running to see my limit. For endurance, I usually keep the speed at 5 MPH and run for 30 mins. On the other hand, for sprinting, I run at 7 MPH. Honestly, last week, I couldn't do the treadmill because I had tons of  homework and I felt sore from fitness as we hadn't done fitness for about 3 weeks. But today, it's finally back on! Treadmill time!

^
Speed was actually 7.0 MPH but I had to lower to rest a little bit!

Gold Stone Park Interval Running/Exercise.

Today, we went to Goldstone Park to do interval running/exercises. It was very windy and sunny but it had a great atmosphere. Basically, one person would run half a lap around the park and the other 3 would do muscular exercises, stretch and rest and we would rotate. It felt good running since we didn't do fitness for a long time, but I didn't like it when the wind would blow on my face on the way back. I mainly did squats, jumping jacks, pushups and situps for the muscular exercises. And I stretched for a long time. My partners really put a lot of effort into the exercise and that motivated me.

LOCO MOTION!

Locomotion was tiring yet fun for me. I think I found it tiring because we haven't done fitness in so long. I felt sore the day after; in my legs, because I didn't stretch for a long time, but now it's starting to wear off. I worked harder than before in this fitness exercise to regain that inspiring momentum, and now I feel fitter than ever! I look forward to doing this again!

Dancing Week!

This week was all about dancing in P:E! The 2 types we did were : Bhangra and Hip-Hop. Personally, I enjoyed Hip-Hop a little bit more because it was more exciting and fun. I enjoyed trying new dance moves and seeing everyone participating. Props to the student-teachers who kept teaching other students for 5 periods straight. It was also said, it was Johns last day..Peace man, going to miss those hand-stands!

40 SEC ON AND 20 SEC OFF

This is the activity where students, get together into groups, and show an exercise that others must follow. However, you can modify the exercises to best fit your ability and if its too easy for you, just go faster. I got with some people, and did sumo squats, which was alright. We worked out on the "kapiti" field. It was great working out in the sun, and the grass was perfect for doing pushups, but not so much for mountain climbers because it was slippery! Overall, I really enjoyed it, but the day after that, my legs and arms were sore. I probably should've stretched more.

BUDDY PROJECT!

Last Friday, we did our buddy project. We walked to Goldstone at lunch, to get to know our buddies and played dragon tail. It is a game which is basically like football, but no tackling. Instead of tackling, we pull the pennies that we tuck behind our backs. It was really fun seeing them come up with creative ideas. My buddy was somewhat quiet when we first met, but after playing the game, and talking, he started to open up. I really think this project made us better leaders and I look forward to the next time we go there!

DRAGON TAILS

Today's class was extremely fun! We played this game called "Dragon Tails" which John, our student-teacher introduced to us. At first, I thought the whole game was going to fail. The rules were, somewhat like football, but no tackling. You would have to tuck pennies to your back, and once pulled, you had to raise your hands in the air and walk away. Since we had no footballs, we used a rubber band, which had to be visible. I truly believe that this game, strengthened our bond as a whole class. For instance, we would have some people opening up and throwing out creative ideas. I was actually the first runner, I believe,  and it was amazing. I didn't listen to any plans and just ran. I almost made it, I was about a centimeter away. Most team-mates would say I suck but they said It was a good try and clapped. This made me more and more engaged into the game. We had this strategy where, we would hide our hands behind our backs and run, Thus, the team name, The Sharks. Overall, enjoyable experience, Go Sharks!

Lacrosse

Lacrosse

Lacrosse was a game I've never played before and the ironic thing, is that it's Canada's national sport! When it was said that we would play lacrosse, I was confused as I didn't know what it was. When I gave it a try, I actually enjoyed it a lot. For instance, I enjoyed throwing it as far as I can to my teammates. I gave some assists and scored some points myself. I would definitely do lacrosse again, anytime, anyday! Overall, Im glad I enjoyed it and so did our whole class! Oh, we also had a student teacher from SFU, John come in. He was very friendly and nice.

Mid Term Refletion

Active Learning - Reflection

During PE this year, how have you shown you are prepared and willing to participate
in a variety of activities?  On what days have you participated to your best effort and
why?  What days have been a struggle for you and why?

I have shown I am willing to participate in a variety of activities, by trying my very best in them. For instance, whenever we have the 1 minute pond run interval, I always run whenever we have to run and walk whenever we have to. Even when we do fitness days, I try my hardest. For example, I modify some exercise, to better fit myself.   I participated to my best effort when we played football (European football) because it is one of my favourite sports. I also tried hard on my last beep test and got a better score. The days that have been a struggle for me were, when we had the first fitness day after winter break. I was getting tired easily, as I wasn't very active during the winter break. Likewise, I had the same problems when I did the hill run as the hill was steep.

How do you contribute to the overall success of the class?  What kind of attitude do
you bring and why?  How do you interact with other students in our class?

I contribute to the overall success of the class by encouraging my friends to try harder and harder. I try to bring a positive attitude to the class, to boost their momentum. I interact with other students in our class through talking to them, and doing fitness days/activities with them.

Describe your participation during fitness days - have you been able to push yourself
physically?  What types of fitness activities do you enjoy the most?  What fitness
goals do you have for the rest of the year?

As recently mentioned, I always try my hardest on fitness days, and I have been able to push myself physically. For instance, when I did the hill run, I felt like puking, and I had a hard time walking back to school. I also felt sore the next day. This shows that I pushed myself to the limit. I also tried hard when we did the triple threat on Jan 27th. I was sweating a lot, which was good. I enjoy fitness days like triple threat, and beep test, as we all have to try as teachers are watching us. This encourages other people to try harder and this is what I like. Some fitness goals I have for the rest of the year are to get fitter, get a higher beep test score, aiming for 9. I also want to work on my endurance so that I don't get tired as easy.

What does "leadership" mean to you?  Who are the best leaders in our class - why?

Leadership, is the ability to take charge and be able to organise. If we had no leader, it would be chaotic. The best leaders in our class, would be, Erlynn, as she's experienced and can lead. She knows how to split groups, and how to organise.

What improvements would you like to make in PE by the end of the year?  What are you the most proud of so far?

Some improvements I would like to make in PE by the end of this year, is to get fitter, stronger, and build more endurance. I am most proud of my last beep test score, as to me, it was a huge improvement.

I deserve an A as I have been up to date with my blogs and I always try my  hardest.

Pond Run

Pond Run

On Friday, the 16th, we had a choice for fitness. It was either the pond run or the community run. The pond run is basically running around the school pond in 1 minute intervals while the community run is running around the community for 20 min non-stop. If you had a score of 8 or higher then you should have gone for the community run. My last beep test score was 8.4, but I chose to go for the pond run, to get used to running as we just had winter break. The pond run was pretty fun and tiring at the same time. I ran all the time when the whistle blew. I would push myself so that I feel exhausted during the last 45 seconds. At the end, I enjoyed the run very much!
